Kansas City Museum
The north east neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri is home to the Kansas City Museum and is considered a small museum. The 3 acre plot which houses the museum is also known as the R.A.Long House and consists of the Corinthian Hall with its outbuildings.
Most of the outbuildings have undergone renovation to house the different displays relating to natural sciences and history of the local area. A 1910 style soda fountain and a 50 seat planetarium also form part of the museum.
In olden times, the R.A. Long House was also known as the "Palace on Gladstone Boulevard" and Corinthian Hall derived its name from the 6 Corinthian columns. The entire space was used as the residence of the Long family until 1934 when R.A.Long breathed his last.
Consequently, in 1939, the estate was donated to the Kansas City Museum Association leading to the museum being opened to the public in 1940. In its original incarnation, the mansion was home to a myriad of rooms and closets full of ornate paintings, tapestries and antique furniture. But, when it became a museum, the space had to be reorganized to afford the convenience of a museum.
The changes to the building did reduce its appeal as a historic house and some of the treasured natural science exhibits and stuffed animals had to be moved to larger establishments better suited to hold and maintain them.
The ownership of the museum was vested with the City of Kansas in 1948 and in 2005 it transitioned to the Union Station Kansas City. Presently most part of the museum building is going through a thorough renovation though the museum continues to be open to visitors.
The renovated facility is slated to be completed in 2010. However, it can well be a couple of years away before you can expect to visit an all new Kansas City museum. Check out a Kansas City travel guide for more recent developments.
