Kansas City Zoo
The beautiful and historic Swope Park is home to the Kansas City zoo spread over 202 acres and nestled inside rolling hills and valleys. The zoo houses over 1,000 animals. Visitors on Kansas City Missouri travel, particularly those arriving with families and young children are bound to enjoy this expansive zoo.
The Swope park itself is a sprawling space of 1805 acres and enjoys the distinction of being the largest among city parks in the United States. Picnic areas, Starlight theater, outdoor theater, swimming, fishing, and two golf courses are on offer for the visitors.
The zoo sports several sections such as Tiger Trail(Asia), Australia, an indoor rainforest, 100 acre African plains, kid zone including the Discovery Barn, 'endangered species carousel' 'Peek-a-Boo Tree' and others. 2010 will also see further additions at the zoo enhancing the Kansas City travel and tourism experience for visitors.
The Kansas City Zoo has a long history dating back to 1909. During the century old existence it has experienced some transitions finally to be reopened as the Tropics in 2009. The Suspension bridge, and the Boathouse and Lagoon are among the unique attractions within the zoo.

The suspension bridge is marginally older than the zoo itself and was originally created as a means of access to dense underbrush and connection between the Grand Entrance and an athletic filed which was under consideration. Much of that is history now and the bridge was renovated during the 1990s. Presently, this 227 foot bridge serves to connect the Congo area and the African plains in the zoo.
The Boathouse was also part of the Swope Park in the early 1900s and it was in 1912 that the first boat hit the waters here. 1922 saw a new beach area coming up near the boathouse and in 1949 a new boathouse replaced the old one. Nearly half a century later, for the African Plains, the Lagoon became a focal point.
Visitors to the zoo can also enjoy a Safari boat ride across the lake for a closer appreciation of various forms of animal and aquatic life present in the area.
