Nelson-Atkins Museum Of Art

Visitors looking for a vast collection of Asian art and neo-classical architecture during their Kansas City MO travel should be at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art.

The origin of the museum itself stems from the enormous love that many wealthy people have for art and the substantial bequests they have made towards this cause. William Rockhill Nelson, the publisher of Kansas City Star was among the major contributors towards this museum with the whole of his estate transitioning to the cause of procuring art work that can be enjoyed by the public.

Another significant contribution came from Mary Atkins, a school teacher. Though the two bequests envisaged establishment of two different museums, adding other smaller bequests, Kansas City decided to have a single but larger museum on Oak Hall which was home for the Nelsons.

The museum opened in December, 1933 and in more recent times, the museum building has been acclaimed as among the 10 best architectural marvels in a list shared by other entries from around the world. Much of the design aspects have been adapted from the Cleveland museum of Art and the Nelson Atkins Museum in Kansas is a six storey structure 390 feet tall and 175 feet wide, which makes it larger than the Cleveland museum. Closer to 2008, the museum also undertook an expansion project.

With a series of donations having been placed at the disposal of the museum, particularly during the middle of the 19th century, it was possible to acquire most of the exhibits that are available today. The task was also made easier because in the aftermath of the World War II, far too many art objects were available on sale both in America and across the world.

Today, Kansas City is indeed proud that it has a museum that caters not only to the art lovers but also those who cherish the rich and distinct architecture. The museum has also made significant difference to the tours and travel in Kansas City.
